Help Can Unraid replace my Dropbox account for large folder sharing?
I'm building an unraid server for bulk file storage out of a big pile of spare parts. My dream is to use this to replace my Dropbox subscription, in addition to bulk file storage. Maybe that's possible?
I work with camera original video files frequently. Is there a way to allow people to download big chunky video folders in a way that's easy for my coworkers and clients to access.
I'd love any input.

Guide Unraid without array
I am new to Unraid and have just setup the server on a small machine.
My requirement is to have a server where I can run all docker containers for home automations and media downloads. I do not want to use unraid for data storage. I have a synology NAS setup with 7 drives in it and that works well for my data storage needs.
My question is, will it be ok to run unraid with a single nvme pool drive and no array disks. What are the drawbacks of this setup? I have setup an everyday backup of all docker containers to the network share (synology).
But what happens if there is a power failure? As the pool is said to be a cache, does power failure means that all data in the pool cache will be wiped off?
Is anyone here using unraid for only docker and apps and not for storing actual long term data?

Help I want to set up my parents computer so I can access and troubleshoot it remotely whenever they have questions. I want to leverage my setup. What are my options?
I have a WireGuard vpn setup. My phone is the only client so that I can access my server when I’m not at home. I’m thinking that I can setup my parents new computer as a WireGuard client in a similar manner then I’ll be able to use windows Remote Desktop connection? In past situations we’ve used Quick Assist which worked but now that we’re getting them a new computer I wanted to rethink the approach considering how I already have a vpn setup. One annoying thing was that Quick Assist wouldn’t let me install software on my parents computer remotely.

HDD Cooling Issues w/ Unraid on Dell Precision 3630
I've got a Dell Precision 3630 tower that I was hoping to turn into a NAS with Unraid, but for some reason the HDD temps were frequently surpassing 110 F even when the array is offline.
I've moved no data to this array yet. Just wanted to try Unraid on this hardware to see if it was a suitable alternative to the Synology NAS i've had running for 6+ years.
I have two 6TB NAS HDDs in the array and set the factory installed Samsung 256GB SSD as cache.
After getting the high temp alarms, and realizing that the three internal fans never seemed to change speed during operation, I installed Dynamix Auto Fan Control and Dynamics System Temp plugins. I figured them based on recommendations from the Dynamics plugin support thread on the Unraid forums.
Now, the system is in a cycle where the fans run at the minimum speed until the HDDs hit the upper temp limit, fans go full blast until the temp comes down, and then the fans go back to min speed. This repeats every few minutes.
Why are these drives getting so hot even when they're not actively being used? What am I doing wrong here?
Help Setting up first time today F4-424Pro
Hi all, great Reddit group here I’ve been reading a ton, curious to get your feedback and suggestions on how to setup my first build.
F4-424Pro, 32GB ram
2x NVME SSD 1TB
4x HDDs 12TB
Unraid will be on a 64GB USB 3.1 stick so I’ll need to figure that part out and made a separate thread asking for help there.
Based on that hardware setup, how would you suggest I configure the array or pools etc.
My goals seem to be similar to most Docker apps, plex, jelly, nextcloud, etc the usual Backups for local machines laptops etc And folder shares for various things
Help Using a larger than 32GB usb?

Parity Check writing to Disc in the Array?
I've recently added an 8th drive (8TB) to my array and I noticed that during the parity check it has roughly the same amount of writes as the parity drive. The other drives have ~500 writes, but the new disc has 40 million. I've also noticed that my checks have gone from 13-15 hours to 2 days.
Is that normal? I don't remember other discs having such a high number of writes when I've added them.

First NAS Build
Hello everyone!
I am trying to start my own homelab on a rack and figured i'd start with the NAS.
I've gotten up with 3 different versions of hardware configs and would like to know your thoughts and if you think i could have done anything better.
I would use it for myself and my wife in our own home to store personal data as well as documents for work. All in all i dont need a lot of TB, there will not be written more than 200-300gb of data in one day.
Thanks for the help, greetings

unraid and nextcloud, keeping nextcloud safe for local network only. dumb questions.
This i probably a dumb question. I see alot of posts about security, and port forwarding, and etc etc.. and do not keep important things on nextcloud unless u harden it/secure it with crazy things I do not really understand. My unraid is basically plex only so far.
all i want is a local dropbox to sync things between unraid server and laptop and desktop. Like saving google photos from desktop to server. saving a password manager file from keepass, saving any other socs as backups from desktop and laptop.. Do i really need to go crazy for local security?
unRAID beginner questions
Hi,
I'm testing unRAID on some spare hardware for now and I have some questions before buying license.
- I'm planning to buy new components for my server and I'm wondering - when I install Plex or Jellyfin (docker), will these to be able to use hardware transcoding? This one is big for me, I want my Plex/JF be able to hardware transcode my content and I'm buying new components just for this.
- I've seen basic license supports up to 6HDDs. Does this mean I can later swap smaller drives out for bigger ones and the count wont go up?
- I've created my current instance/account on some old USB key. Its connected to my mail and all. I assume that if I buy new USB stick, it will probably get a new ID and the best way is to buy a licence on that specific key/id?
- What happens if my hardware dies (components) on me? I know that license is tied to USB ID, but what about hardware? If I replace my hardware with different one, will existing unRAID instance still boot or do I have to start from scratch because of maybe some HW differences between old nad new build.
- What is the best way to approach automatic backups on unRAID (backup to external systems)?
- My biggest fear is losing data. I'm planning to have unRAID server with:
- 1x RAID1 volume (2 drives) for my personal important data
- 1x JBOD with 4 drives for multimedia that I dont really care for if they die
- backup RAID1 in older Synology
- manual backups on 2 different drives (2 different locations)
What if one of the drives in that RAID1 fails? Will unRAID do all the "recovery/copying" for me or not when I insert a new drive? It worked like a charm on my Synology and I'm kind of expecting it on unRAID too - especially since I'm paying for the product.
Help Jumping on the unRAID wagon from a stone age Qnap (advices needed)
Hi folks,
Finally jumping onto the unRAID wagon after years of lurking. Did tons of research, but still need a bit of help:
Situation:
1. Around 20TB data on an stone age QNAP 4 bay (TS 439 Pro II), raid 5 across 4x8TB Red Pros, which consists of a) Media files for PLEX & b) Photos (need to be secured no matter what, currently doing manual 3-2-1)
The "server" is actually an old Windows Lenovo laptop hard-wired to the router, acting as the where all the PLEX and arr's sits, as well as the "staging" HD for downloads before filebot moves everything to the NAS
Purchased a UGreen NAS DXP8800 (8 bay) Pro (i5), to be flashed into unRAID, with 4x22TB Exos (hope it's not as loud as ppl say). Added 16GB mem (machine came with 8GB), so its a silly 24GB atm as well as a single 970 PRO 500GB NVME to be the "cache"
Plan:
Completely retire the laptop, moving all transcoding on Plex and other computation tasks to the i5 quicksync (don't know what to do with the old 4 bay), maybe an offsite backup option
Parity of 1, and a pool of 3x22tb, preclear all, move the 20tb data from old NAS and then toss the 4x8tb into the pool. Thus having a usable of 3x22tb + 4x8tb, with actual useable space of around 92TB-ish
Running plugin/dockers for all the Arrs, Pi-hole, etc. I have never touched anything Linux in my life and i look forward to learning how to set it up as a personal learning opportunities
Questions:
Can you pre-clear 4 drives at the same time? Would that be any time savings there by "parallel processing"? it looks like it takes at least 3 days to clear one 22tb. Would it be better to do say 2 in the UGreen NAS, another 2 with an external dock connected to the old laptop, etc to speed things up
The old QNAP has 2 Gigabit LAN ports, the 8 bay NAS has 10G ports, 2.5g 5 port switch and 1 WiFi router with 4 gigabit lan port. Couple of things I cannot figure out here:
a. How do I "combine" the 2 gigabit LANs on the QNAP for faster transfer (is this even possible)?
b. assuming a) above is possible, is the whole thing still bottlenecked on the wifi router/swtich which only has gigabit lan ports?
c. Assuming b) is true, then can I somehow link (Old NAS, New NAS, (a laptop to manage things) all hardwired into the 2.5G switch, hence removing the router gigabit port limitation?
d. anything else I should be aware to remove as much overhead as possible to make the transfer as fast as possible? (I think I will mount the old NAS as a drive in the UnRaid, and use rsync to move things (dont know how, will figure it out, somehow)
I am thinking about using the "highwater" at 50% in UnRaid, so does it make sense to put the 4x8TB in it on day one or only put these in when the 22TB ones start to fill up (currently hypothesis does not matter)
the 500gb NVME cache, does it matter if it is ZFS or other file format? I guess no need to use cache in the 1st big data transfer from the old NAS? Since the network transfer speed is not fast enough to even saturate 1 HD write speed, rite? 2x1gigbit < 220MB single HD write speed
Is it a problem that I have a 8gb stick and a 16gb stick in the memory at the moment? I remember from my PC building days that dual channel matters on the Northbridge to CPU linkage. would that limitation ever kick in a NAS (media server mostly) setting?
in the UGreen Nas, there are actually 3 additional HD slots in addition to the 8 bay, 1 SSD 128GB (which I don't see and 2 NVME slots. so one of the NVME 500gb drive will be the cache, so once moved to the unRAID, what am I gonna do with that 1 SSD 128gb? I understood the Unraid is booted from USB then lives in memory and not in a harddrive
A bit of a long post, thank you all for your time in advance. #newbie
Help Swapped damaged disk, data rebuild nuked my whole data
I honestly have no idea how this happened.
Last week CPU was always at 100%, check the logs and read errors on disk 1.
Already happened to a WD disk I had, and this was the 2nd of the same brand and size, so I figured "yup WD doesnt know how to make disk clearly", since this was the 2nd time swapping a disk of the same model.
Did the same procedure as last time, following the documentation, press Start on Data-Rebuild and wait for 9 hours.
And what do I get as a surprise? after those 9 hours, it only brought back a couple of files and everything else disappears . Essentially 99.8% of the data that was there is now gone.
Can someone guide in where could I have gone wrong, and if there is anyway to have a previous parity data or something like that to recover the data?

24 drive build
Got a cheap Alibaba 24 drive hot swap case and need to build something for a friend. Its a slow to expand situation but get the hardware and cabling all done for easy adding
He does not want any dockers, Vm special plugins, just bare min with some extras as needed for reliability/maintenance. The only requirement is some sort of higher speed Cache, like an m.2 drive
For hardware, we are looking at 10gbps network connection. 24 drive SATA and somewhat decent power consumption. I don't know if we should go 1 24 drive HBA card or 2 8 port HBA and onboard SATA (8 ports) or some other combination.
We would like to go 30 drives but finding a good price case is hard.

Help I have Reallocated Sectors Count and Current Pending Sector Count errors
I bought a used Samsung 1TB notebook hard drive. I checked it with CrystalDiskInfo and found errors for Reallocated Sectors Count and Current Pending Sector Count. I ran the command `chkdsk E: /r /f`, and after hours it finished, but when I checked CrystalDiskInfo again, the information appeared to be the same.
My question is, what else can I do? Is this HDD reliable enough to install in a PS3 (keeping in mind that the PS3 will format it and install the operating system)? Thank you.

Help Browser in Docker for headless downloads
I have to download some bigger files to empty and stop using a cloud service.
I found R3Firefox to run Firefox in Docker, but it's running FF84, which is so outdated that some sites block it.
Does anyone have a better idea? I would like to avoid having to keep a VM open just to download something.

When my space goes down to 12.8tb it suddenly comes back up to 13.2 a few days later
I have 54tb total, and I've noticed over the last couple months every time my server storage goes down to 12.8 tb left it will automatically go back up to about 13.2 within a few days , it does it automatically without me doing anything . And come to think of it's never ever gotten below about 12.8
I have radar and sonnar so new content is automatically getting added so it should be going one way and storage should never be increasing.
What the heck is happening here?

Half the speed with LSI 9207-8i w/ RES2SV240 than LSI 9211-8i
imageI noticed that my parity sync's and rebuilds (those lined out are rebuilds from a bad connection 78-84MB/s) are about half the speed of what they used to be. In that time i switched from an lsi 9211-8i to a 9207-8i with an Intel RES2SV240 Sas expander. I'm using dual link cables (first 2 slots on the card, closest to the back plate) and breakout cables in the remaining 4 slots on the expander.
My 18tb dual parity drives didn't change in the listed parity sync's...only the hba changed.
Anything i can look into to get my speeds back up? I just rebuilt parity with 1 20tb drive and it took almost 3 days, and wanted to make sure its running as fast as i can before i start rebuilding with the second 20tb parity.
I haven't looked at the bios in a while, i'm assuming that the mobo would be running at the fastest pcie speeds. The mobo is a msi z690 with a 12600k, hba is in the top x16 slot.
thoughts?
