Welcome to r/MYOG!

Hey MYOGers! We are trying something new to spur more discussion and interaction in the monthly posts, to help users understand the purpose and rules of this sub, and to make resources more easy to find. To do that we're combining the monthly posts and adding this one as a permanently pinned post. In addition to the content you see below, we'll post any announcements or changes to the sub in this post.

*NEW\* - You can now choose from a few new flair options! Let us know if there are any you'd like to see as an option!

Mission Statement - Join our community to learn and share how you make your own gear (MYOG), including tents, tarps, hammocks, stoves, packs and anything else outdoor gear related. We encourage supportive, collaborative, and useful posts and comments free of advertising.

Resources and Links - The Wiki contains links to a variety of patterns, guides, and information on methods and materials. Answers to many questions can also be found using the sub’s search function. If you’re still not able to find the info you’re looking for, you can post your question in the Monthly Discussion post or create a new post to ask. We ask that you make an effort to find an answer using the available resources before creating a post.

Monthly Discussion Post - This is our recurring post to ask and answer small questions, or discuss topics you think are too small to warrant their own post. Our previously separate monthly post for buying and selling is being combined into this thread to increase traffic to both, and to make room for this stickied post.

Rules - To accomplish our mission, we ask that you respect the following rules for posting on r/MYOG:

1. Excessive self-promotion - Advertising

This subreddit is a community for exchanging information and inspiring creativity. It is not a place to post with the intent of promoting your business.

2. Excessive Self-Promotion - Project Shares

If you are a member sharing your myog work for the sake of sharing, we ask that you limit your project shares to roughly once per week. Information and sharing questions are encouraged, and more frequent posts of this type are encouraged within reason.

3. Off-Topic Posts/Comments - General

Posts and comments not related to self-made outdoor gear will be removed. Exceptions are for things such as kits or commercial products that are targets at the gear making community as long as the Excessive self-promotion rule is not violated.

4. Off-Topic - Which Sewing Machine?

This sub is not intended for open-ended questions about which sewing machine you should buy for MYOG. These post and comments will be removed.

5. Off-Topic - Commissions

Posts or comments relating to commissioned gear will be removed. Commission related posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGCommissions.

6. Off-Topic - Tactical Gear

Posts and comments about gear relating to firearms, weapons, or other types of tactical equipment (e.g. holsters, plate carriers, concealed carry, etc.) will be removed. These posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGtacticalgear.

Thank you! If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! Now go forth and MYOG, and come back to share your journey!

I posted the jacket and trousers a few weeks back. This was my first sewing project and I've winged it but super happy to get very usable kit out of it. I've made booties from scraps from the rest of the sewing. I've extended the cuffs and trousers legs too for more coverage and comfort.

I've embraced the very handmade feel of this by doing all changes and repairs in a neon multicoloured thread. It's imperfect, and that's fine by me :)

The jacket, trousers and booties weigh 496g All 10d taffeta Outer and 10d(jacket) 7d (trousers) ripstop inner

I've had this idea in my head for a while. Many projects were ahead of this that needed done first. I picked up this green singer for a few bucks minus its original base. Bought a 450watt servo and built a Teak base and foot pedal. I think I have around 120 bucks in this project and this weekend to do it. It came out great, but pretty heavy for a mobile repair unit.

Dry bag pannier(or, the poor man's pannier)

Hi! So, I needed a pannier for some upcoming bikepacking adventures. Problem is, I kinda hate saddle bags. Mine specifically is really bad, I Cant afford a good pannier right now and dont want to waste money on some cheapo stuff so I modified a dry bag that I had lying around using some 3D printing(PETG, to hopefully avoid catastrophical failures), cheap hardware (M4 nuts and bolts, some washers ,and the hooks are just bent L brackets) and good old electrical tape. will probably 3d print some better hooks later.

Not shown in the pictures are the 3d printed parts inside the bag used to mount the hooks in place.

I Wanted to avoid bunjee cords, as I heard they are quite dangerous if they meet the spokes.

Total modufication cost was maybe $4, probably even lower than that.

Anyway, Seems sturdy enough. I guess only time will tell how well it holds up.

I am currently working on this backpack and I've decided to go with a roll top closure rather than a drawstring. How do you decide how high to make the roll top?

Alternatives to Sailrite LSZ-1?

Upvotes

Hi folks, I'm relatively new to sewing/fabrics but have enough experience to have destroyed a couple thrift store sewing machines due to my own ignorance/impatience. Looking for a new one that meets the following:

  • portable (I've got a small garage that also serves as a woodworking/personal car repair area)

  • can attach canvas/leather/1" climbing webbing to other canvas/leather/webbing

  • can be disassembled and repaired with available parts and YouTube videos

  • under $1200

  • is fun to use once I overcome my own ignorance/impatience

The Sailrite LSZ-1 seems to fit the criteria (specifically given this review: https://youtu.be/M94l4XBaIgs ), and I can't find any others that qualify -- what else should I look at? I'm pretty good at general making/repair, so I don't mind upgrading an existing machine but if truth be told I'd rather spend and extra $500 and get to the sewing rather than swapping motors/building a portable table system/etc. What machines deserve a look? Thanks!

Question Repair of the shoulder pocket on Gossamer Gear Kumo

I have a habit of carrying a titanium flask in my shoulder pocket. Although the flask is quite slim, the mesh at the bottom of the pocket has started to tear.

What's the best way to repair this spot to prevent or at least slow down the damage? Does anyone have experience with this kind of repair or know of a guide?

In the meantime, I'll be moving the flask to the side pockets of my backpack.

I was sent the wrong footprint ( nemo hornet 2 )for my nemo kunai tent and told to keep it. So i made a matching vestibule floor to match my tents footprint. This upgrade keeps my gear cleaner and makes getting in and out of the tent far easier. I only hand sew as i very much enjoy the projects.

Absolute beginner sewing lessons for gear in NYC?

Anyone in NYC have suggestions of a teacher for taking sewing lessons? I’m mechanically minded, but I know almost nothing about sewing. It would be a bonus to find someone who had some experience with outdoor gear.

Someone posted a question on how to sew interior storage slip in pockets, but could also be on another sub

Just saw this travel organizer of my wife’s and realized pics may help someone.

The fabric is tucked along the edges to allow it to expand

Hope this helps. I don’t know how to post pics unless it a new post

Question Plastic backed foam in Lochby journals?

Thumbnail

Hi folks - I have a ruined Lochby field journal (left too close to the campfire 😅) that I took apart to understand its construction.

The middle support layer is this odd plastic backed foam that is sort of bendable. The plastic is oddly textured and the foam is roughly 2mm. They are sandwiched together by a layer of glue. Together, the foam and plastic are a bit bendable.

What is this material and where can I buy more?

I would love to use this at the bottom of duffle bags or similar projects that need a bit of structure.

Thanks!

Question Can you help me fixing my dimensions?

Thumbnail

First off: Ain't it a cutie? Secondly: Can you help me fixing the dimensions? It's thought to be a 10x10x10 cm Boxy Bag, but no matter the calculators I use, I don't get how to determine the corner cut-outs / seams.

As you can see, the height's ~10 cm, whereas the front- and back (Velcro) is 11 cm, and the sides (wings) are 9 cm.

I started with a piece of fabric being 24 x 42 cm, thus I'd think that by adding a centimeter to the width (24), and deducting a centimeter from the length (42), I'd end up eith the same height, while going from 9 > 10, and 11 > 10 cm, correct?

  • I used a 4x4 cm square for the corner cutouts.

material suggestions for removable shoulder strap pad on crossbody bag

Hello! First post here but this group has already been enormously helpful with the project I am working on. I am making my son a crossbody bag to house a medical device that he wears all day long. Although it's not super heavy I do want to make sure it's comfortable since he will be wearing it on the daily. I have a pattern for a removable shoulder strap pad (https://allsewpetite.com/crafting-a-comfy-fabric-strap-pad/ ) but I would like to make it out of more durable materials. I have sourced the other materials for the bag from Rockywoods and Seattle Fabrics. Could anyone suggest materials from those vendors that I could use for this?

Patching a stretchy mesh netting?

TL;DR, I'm looking for some advice on how to go about patching a mesh/fine netting, polyester, stretchy fabric. It's 19gsm.

https://polynet.co.nz/cdn/shop/products/[email protected]?v=1652149500 here's an image

Apologies for this being slightly off-topic. I learnt to sew (badly) from this forum, and don't really know where else to go! Besides, the material is a super lightweight, stretchy, polyester mesh - pretty typical material in the UL MYOG hiking world!

When I'm not hiking, I run a small organic market garden. We use a stretchy fine mesh, pulled over hoops, to keep problematic insects out at various points of the year. Unfortunately it tears easily, which means it isn't so functional at keeping problematic insects off crops.

I'm not sure how to patch this, since the material stretches in all directions. I assume using the wrong stitching/materials to patch it will create points that are likely to tear again?

Question What machine to get for lightweight projects that compliments a Consew 206RB?

I have a Consew 206RB-5 that is perfect for heavier projects like bike bags, duffels, etc. but it completely destroys really lightweight fabrics and anything that stretches. I'm wanting to experiment with making shelters, lightweight garments, etc. but I have limited space for another machine. Is there any problem with just getting a cheap used domestic machine for this kind of lighter weight materials? What will I miss out on vs a more expensive machine for lightweight stuff?

Repair / Modification Advice for repairing tear in delicate nylon jacket?

Thumbnail

Hello, any advice for repairing a cycle jacket that was ripped along the shoulder/ arm? The label indicates 50% nylon 50% polyester. I'd guess the outer is nylon and the filling is poly?

The fabric is very thin and delicate. The company offers repairs but they've said they'll just use black fabric to patch it, and I was hoping the repair might be less obvious. I know that it won't be a perfect fix but something better than a big black patch would be great.

I thought perhaps I could get some of the repair patch fabric but place it in between the outer and insulation layers, and hand stitch to the outer?

Or some kind of iron on solution?

Other than the main tears, there's also some faint snagging but I'm really not sure how to repair that.

Jacket is water resistant but not waterproof, so the repair doesn't need to be watertight.

Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Bagbuff Mt. Flyer Fanny

Has anyone built the .5L version of the Bagbuff Mt. Flyer Fanny succesfully? I tried to make three of them for my son and his friends for a camp out trip, and could not for the life of me figure out the second to last final assembly step of attaching gusset and back. Had to heavily modify the pattern so I could at least use the front panels I had assembled for the pattern, but had to scrap the oddly shaped gusset and back panel from original pattern. Would like to know what I was doing wrong.

Question Question about tarp material

Has anyone tried making a tarp out of 0.93 OSY Membrane Silpoly from Ripstop? Assuming you have properly reinforced french seams, corners, gromets, etc, is it strong enough?

Or would you go with something heavier, like 1.1, 1.6, or 1.9 OSY silpoly?

Weight is primary concern for me here, as would the base material's ability to be a "print on demand" offering from Ripstop. (I want to make a custom printed tarp.)

Down skirt suggestions and help needed

Hi all, I'm starting to line up my sewing projects for the winter and I've set my eyes on a down skirt for winter camping/ice climbing/skiing. Details:

  • 700FP down from a broken sleeping matt.

  • Ripstop Nylon silicone coated, 20den, 36g/sqm as main fabric.

  • Full length zipper along side.

  • Open front pocket with buttons or similar (inspiration from Shelby Outdoor).

  • Elastic waist or similar.

  • Unisex but intend to use it myself (male, 188cm, lean).

This is my first project working with down which I'm honestly a bit scared for. Getting the down out of the sleeping matt was quite a project in itself. However, I chose a skirt since it was a quite forgiving garment in terms of length and baffle size. I do have a few things I'd like your guys feedback on:

  • Baffle height / loft. I drew up the skirt and CAD and 15mm loft (either side, sewn through baffles) seems to be the max. Does this sound reasonable?

  • Baffle size. I choose 60mm width which gives me 10 baffles at the current length. Anything to consider when deciding a baffle size?

  • Skirt fit: It seems like a fairly simply construction. Either it's straight (pattern being a trapez) or first a taper then straight (pattern being a trapez on top of rectangle). Has anyone made something similar or have experience with how legs and hips taper? Really appreciate any insights on this one.

  • Down tips: any tips or suggestions on how to work with down, how to sew the baffles, how to avoid a complete mess would be greatly appreciated.

  • Needle/thread tips: fabric is thin and slippery as hell. Already a bit scared here. I intend on using wondertape and microtex needles. Any tips on thread (I have Gutterman available)?

Album with inspiration

Question Hammock under quilt from a mummy sleeping bag?

Visual aids and write ups I’ve found illustrate how to make an under quilt using a down blanket and stuff like that.

I like the “clew” type that seems often suggested. I want it to be full-length.

I’m have an old mummy style sleeping bag with synthetic insulation. I’m looking for tips on modifying it. For instance, removing zippers and excess material to reduce bulk and weight.

How do I figure out how much to remove? What other tips do you have?

If you’ve attempted this, what did you do, how’d it work out, and what did you learn?

So far the plan is to clip it to the hanging hammock, possibly with the hammock stuffed with blankets to spread it open.

It’s a Wise Owl brand 10’ double hammock, if that matters. I’d like to be able to use it with a 12’ hammock, when I come across a real bargain.

Thanks for your insights!
