Q&A /r/GoPro Weekly Questions Thread - Ask all of your questions here!

Welcome to the /r/GoPro Weekly Questions thread!

This is the place where everyone, beginner or advanced, should ask your general GoPro related questions, or ask for help troubleshooting! We encourage you to post here rather than make your own thread, as this is a great place for us veteran users to answer your questions regularly, it minimizes basic question clutter on the main page, and allows users with discussion threads to stay on the front page longer before getting bumped off over time.

A couple notes before you get started here-

  1. We have community rules, and everyone needs to follow them. Please take some time to read through them and their descriptions, and if you have any questions, just PM the moderators!
  2. Remember to make your BEST effort to find the answer before asking. Read your manuals (link below), and use the search function and google to at least get yourself started. Asking to be "spoon fed" simple answers that can easily be found by googling will often get you a short comment, so make your best effort and share what you've found so far if you can't find the answer!
  3. If you have a problem, don't just describe it... SHOW US! Telling us you have some "blur" in your image could be ANY number of things, but showing us might help us figure it out for you quickly and easily. Upload some samples to youtube or imgur!
  4. This is a user-run community, and is not staffed by GoPro. We can make recommendations and share tips, but we can't resolve shipping and order issues, and for things of that nature you need to contact support!

Remember to check out the wiki in the sidebar for lots of useful info about all things GoPro! Below is list of resources for our most common questions.

AMA with Abe, GoPro's Sr. Creative Director + HERO13 Black Giveaway!

Hey , as a follow-up to u/GoPro-Pablo’s AMA on Monday, I’m back today for round 2!

I’m GoPro’s Sr. Creative Director & Creative Fellow. I’ve been at GoPro since 2010, and have been part of the crew responsible for the content coming out of GoPro since then (think launch videos dating back to HERO1 aka HD HERO). In the last few years I’ve been wearing two hats – working side by side with our engineering team on product development as well.

What's an AMA?

AMA's are pretty simple - this is your chance to ask me "anything." I have been shooting with HERO13 Black and the HB-Series Lenses for a few months now, and have been working on them from a development standpoint even before that, so if you have questions about using them as creative tools, don’t be afraid to ask.

This AMA will be  ~12 hour AMA, and is going live at 10am PST

You’ve heard this before from the mods, but a few reminders:

  1. I can't talk about future products in development, product roadmap, + similar privileged information. You can ask, but I won't be able to answer you in a satisfying way. Instead, consider asking more generic questions. Rather than asking if a specific product/feature is in development, ask questions about whether or not a specific user need is visible to or important to GoPro, etc.
  2. Let's keep the tech support for other threads! While this community is a great place to get help with your camera, let's keep this about the new camera system, how things get developed, GoPro history, + other insights.
  3. As always per the community rules, "share stoke" and not "bad karma."

HERO13 Giveaway

The giveaway stoke is continuing, and we’re giving away another HERO13 Black today. Keep an eye out for a DM from u/gopro_chris who will be contacting the winner.

Other than your question, there is a basic giveaway criteria that we employ here on the subreddit to make sure genuine participants win, and that we can actually get the prize to you. These are our standard rules across the subreddit, but if you have a question about them, please feel free to send the mods a message.

  1. Your account must have been created before today, + have a reasonable level of genuine activity on the account. We reserve the right to disqualify accounts that look like they were created simply for participating/entering.
  2. You need to participate with a "top level" comment (this means a question posted as a reply to this thread, not just a reply to another comment/question) asking me anything. You can ask more than one question, but it does not matter if they are together in a single comment or multiple comments, so consider consolidating multiple questions into the same comment. Additional comments do not give "extra entries" or anything like that- if you participate, you are entered.
  3. You need to live in a place GoPro can easily ship to, + you will need to provide your shipping information to u/gopro-chris.
  4. Comments posted within 12 hours of the AMA are eligible. We'll leave the thread open to allow discussion to continue beyond that, but any additional comments won't be eligible to win anything.

GoPro Hero 13 Mounting Fingers fit onto Hero 10 and above (New Magnetic Mount)

Since my last post caused some confusion.

You might have seen the new magnetic mounting system they got inspiration from DJI, well I've thought why wouldn't it work on older GoPros?

As for the Mountig Fingers, of course they won't say it on they're website, but it does indeed fit the Hero 10 and above.

You need the Replacement fingers (https://gopro.com/de/de/shop/mounts-accessories/replacement-folding-fingers/AEMFR-002.html from the Hero 13 and the mount itself (https://gopro.com/de/de/shop/mounts-accessories/latch-mount-magnetic-hero13/AEMAG-001.html) and your good to go.

The Mount itself is also available on Amazon the Mounting fingers However aren’t right now.

If you're a motovlogger and use the MediaMod, you know what that means, as it also fits with it, in return you get way faster battery changing, yes you heard that right.

Best incar settings for rally

Hi,

I have just bought a Gopro 11 and I wonder if I can get tips on the best settings when I have the camera mounted in the rally car. I have it mounted between the seats in the roll cage. Upgraded from the first Hero model so there is a bit more to learn with this one. :)

As you can see in the picture, I also wouldn't want the picture to pan too much. You'd rather see the road than the seats. :) But still have enough stabilization.

Since I don't have such a powerful computer that can handle 4k, I intend to record in 1080p to begin with.

I am grateful for any tips I can get.

OMG!!!! Cloud footage missing. Check yours.

Upvotes

I have no idea what happened and I'm on the phone with GoPro now. My footage has disappeared. I can see the footage in the app, but when I try to play it I get an error. Its not at all visible in the browser.

I was about to delete some footage that I previously downloaded to my computer and decided to check the cloud first and it was not there. I then started to do more spot checks and found more missing. I did not delete it from the cloud.

GP12 Black with MLM2.0 - MTB Pov stability issues.

Dear actiongraphers of the internet, I come seeking your wisdom.

Just yesterday I went for a bike ride. Weather was horrible, but that's life. Got my trusty gopro and went riding.

You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnXVvaDXx_Y

A lot of the footage looks like this, except for the very sunny areas where it's as you'd expect it to.

GP Specs and settings:
GP12 Black with MaxLens Mod 2.0 in Maxlens mode.
EV Comp - 0
WB 5500k
ISO 100-800 min-max
Horizon lock: on
hypersmooth: Autoboost
sharpness: low
color: natural
lens: wide

Video: 16:9 1080p, 30fps
Mount: Chestmount

Bike: Transition Repeater, 170mm travel front & back

Looking at my older footage, I don't think I had issues as severe. Not sure if I was using the MLM2 lens consistently, though. In my experience the MLM mode adds features but degrades quality (just film blue sky with MLM on to notice the noise).

Is there anything I can do to resolve this? Honestly, the majority of the footage is ruined.

I have another footage shot with a helmet mount, at literal dusk and doesn't have this effect as pronounced. Not sure if this was maxlens or not. Could've been since the material was shot in 4:3 at 4k.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkyeXrIgDx4

Aside from my biking skills, what can I do? Honestly, I thought that going with lower resolution would improve stability.

What are your experiences with MLM and low-light shooting? What can I improve?

Movavi IS compatible with codec R.265 and GoPro Hero13

Hi I recently asked about video editing software that could use with my GoPro Hero13 because my Movavi editing software wasn't working with the Hero13 files. Turns out I needed a Microsoft upgrade, buying the HEVC app for around a dollar solved the problem.

Movavi is a relatively cheap editor option, so us worth considering.

If you have the same problem you can get the app from the Microsoft app store.

What video editor is compatible with the Hero13 codec H.265

Update: it turns out Movavi is compatible with H 265 codecs. I got some info from Microsoft and I had to buy an HEVC update. So all good and thanks for the info.

Argh I use the Movavi video editor, buy a Hero13, it's not compatible.

What's everyone using for YouTube edits?

Power options

Hello there and thanks in advance for any advice

I have two gopro 10s I use to ride my ebike. Problem is the batteries last for about 30 mins and it's a pain having to stop, disassemble mods, mounts, to just change a battery. Soooo, I found a 3200ah battery back in the house and want to get a usb c male to two usb c female splitter/hub to then go to both gopros.

I found some adapters around the house but it seem like one is for audio and other is for data. So I can't get both to charge at the same time.

My questions to you are

  1. Is this even possible?
  2. What splitter/tiny hub would you recommend

In picture above you see the trial set up but only gopro on left is charging via the battery back. Icon may be difficult to see.

A bit disappointed with functionally of gopro 11.. but maybe it's just user error?

A few points of contention: First, I like the horizon lock function for skiing as it removes the nauseating rocking of the horizon in chase videos when carving. However it appears to only work in the camera when using narrowest field of view? I discovered I can record in a wider lens setting and then apply horizon lock in the gopro quik app but that's time consuming and clunky when all I really want to do is plug it in to the tv (using the media mod addon (why so convoluted?!) to make use of an HDMI cable connection) after a day on the slopes and watch some action replays.

That leads into another couple issues. When first connected to HDMI there's an audio feedback loop for a few seconds that shouldn't be there. Can be deafening if you haven't already muted the home theater!

Then there's the interface using the touch screen to navigate to the video clip you want to watch and select it. It's not very sensitive to touch. Surely they could have designed the app to remotely control the playback to simplify things?

Image quality is great but otherwise I'm a bit annoyed with these issues.

GoPro 13 or the Field?

Hey guys, it's upgrade time. I am coming from a H7B which has treated me pretty well, but I feel like it's time for an upgrade, I am looking for better video quality for my fishing videos. Is the H13B worth the upgrade or are there better action cameras out there for the money? Like I said I make fishing blogs, and when it comes to editing I like the camera to do most of the work as possible.

Accessories / Battery - Asia/Pacific Stock?

Seems to be an issue where no retailers in australia/pacific have any gopro hero 13 batteries, or accessories.....?

  • Cannot buy batteries off the online store.

Makes it fairly difficult to put these cameras into production when we have no spare batteries?

Anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Overheat-B-Gone

I mean, I get it, when I use these things in Linear as stationary cameras off of the internal batteries, that's not exactly what they were designed for. It's still aggravating beyond belief when they shut down from overheating.

A 40mm fan, four 3D printed parts, some M3 screws, and a couple of parts salvaged out of disposable vapes, and here we are. A case that will keep the GoPro cool by running a constant stream of air over the screen, run off of its own attached power supply for hours, and will hinge up and out of the way if you need to use the screen. Specifically designed to work with just the 8, though; I'd have to remodel at least parts from scratch for any other model.

Gopro 12, night anamorphic settings?

Hi guys! I am getting a gopro 12 this week. I got an anamorphic lens from a friend which I would love to use for evening/night videos. (I am aware small sensors are not the best in low light and plan to use a gimbal at night). With that said, what settings would be best or a anamorphic lens at night please?

4k, 25fps, 1/50, 8:7 linear? (and shall I increase til 50 fps for the gimbal? I remember the moaning etc require more fps to be smooth).

Thank you!

Gopro newbie

I'm not very tech savvy as I've always preferred the simple old ways but I've just got a gopro 11 as a starter. I took it kayaking and took some long 1hr videos. now that I've got home its taking forever to upload a single video because I have rather poor internet single where I live. Is there better ways to upload the video and how would I go about doing that? I'll worry about figuring out how to edit them later.

Found a GoPro 11 black at a Japanese thrift store

Hello there. I used to own a go pro back in the day. Lately I've been wanting to record me and my wife's snorkeling adventures just for fun. I found a go pro 11 black at a thrift store here in Japan for $80. Are there any note able problems with the 11s? I've been reading overheating issues with go pros which kind of made me hesitant to buy. I've been looking at the 360 x4 and it seems to be somewhat the same with the heat issues. You can't beat the price but I would hate to buy this device and not use it. That's kind of what happened with my last go pro. Had the hero 3

Question on aspect ratios

I’ve just ordered a 13 + wide angle lens for the winter season. I’ve been using 360 cameras for the last few years and I have a basic question about aspect ratios (forgive the ignorance here).

Are there any disadvantages in filming in 1:1 and then trimming for different platforms, compared to 16:9 if your priority platform is YouTube (16:9)?

I guess what I’m asking is, do you get a wider fov when filming 16:9 vs 1:1 and then cropping?

GoPro 10 turns off around 10°C

Hello everyone,

As the title says, my GoPro 10 turns off at around 10° Celsius when using the original GoPro batteries (not the Enduro). This happens despite the battery having enough charge, and I can turn the camera back on again. The GoPro simply displays the message: "GoPro turned off due to empty battery."

I am aware that there were some issues with cold weather, but I assumed they occurred at around 0°C or even freezing temperatures.

My question is, does anyone else experience the same issue?

Should I get Enduro batteries for using my GoPro at 10°C?

Thanks!
