How to remove malicious chrome extension

Upvotes

Hi all, for the last little while ive been dealing with a chrome extension that redirects me to yahoo or bing and its just generally been a pain in the ass. I have been looking around and ve found a few solutions on youtube and other places, but none have seemed to help. I've tried going into my registry editor and deleting the file but it wont let me. Ive also tried the stefanvd policy remover which hasnt worked. Please let me know if theres anything else i can try.

Well drafted scam - account takeover attempt - used proper phone number

I received a phone call today from (650) 253 0000 to my personal cell phone

I was told that there was an account transfer request for my e-mail address *****@gmail.com - that there was a death certificate, lawyer signature, the whole nine yards. After name verification they said they'd have the "legal team" call back.

The same person called back, not a "legal team". They then said the verification of my account was to respond to the alert on my device, which was an "account transfer" notification. At which point I asked for a case number and told them I'd reach out directly, not to someone why called me - I would not be "verifying" my account ownership by "transferring" it. They said because the process was started, it was "transferring it back". Not buying it.

I was given a case number of: CLG*****

The person on the phone sounded like they could have indeed been from cali, was moderately well spoken, and they had the right phone number to call from. Upon asking questions it just couldn't hold water.

I have a "master" account that a bunch of emails funnel into, and I missed that one sub account (sadly, one of the more important ones) when setting up passkeys, 2 factor, etc on my accounts. Immediately set all of that up, and log out all users.

Stay safe out there, and verify your less logged into accounts are staying up to date!

Google Remote Lock issue

Hello,

Google recently rolled out a new feature - theft protection along with remote lock by phone number. On all of our phones (Slovakia region) we are getting unable to verify phone number.

Is this working for anyone on S23/S24 with dual sim and using Samsung messages (I wont be using google messages for any matter). Or is this a typical Google thing ofrolling it out and being tested only on pixels just to make headlines.

Thanks

Google used to be magic

Today, Google is awful at its core mission. Internet search.

It is a mess, and requires so much more time and effort to sift through their convoluted results that it has become insufferable.

So awful, I rarely ever use it anymore. 🤷

Finally found a really great use for Gemini: Baby tracking in Google Docs

Our daughter was born this week, and we've looked at a ton of baby tracking apps to keep a log of feedings, poops, nap times, etc. It was really hard to find something that both allowed syncing between me and my partner, and also could assure me of data security. So I decided as a temporary backstop to just record things into a table in Google Docs. Then as a lark I decided to ask Gemini questions about what I'd written, like 'how long did baby feed on Tuesday', and to my surprise, it knew the answer! It can actually answer a bunch of questions of a similar nature based on the typed up info, and I think this serves as a perfect tracking app for us. We're not so worried about Google sharing data with unscrupulous companies (though I guess this depends on whether you think Google is scrupulous).

In retrospect, I suppose this is a pretty standard application of LLMs, but it hadn't really occurred to me beforehand.

It seems I can't get rid of this huge button right in the centre of my Google app after turning off discover from my settings.

It feels invasive and Google discovery addiction seems equally bad as any other media addiction.

Google slides word count necessity!!

I hate having to open a separate tab just to copy and paste on docs to see my word count, why can’t slides have the same tool option to count the words!?! I can’t be the only who finds this annoying when doing projects with a word limit.

So easy to enable Google Workspace, so hard to disable

With one touch to enable on Gemini, my Gmail and Documents are now privy to AI. All I wanted was a simple dinner reminder. However, now when asking Gemini to disable this feature, it gives me manual instructions that isn't easy to find.

How to turn off autocomplete search terms

Seriously, this is getting so stupid. I wanted to search for the size of Jupiter's moon, Io. So I searched 'Io size' and hit enter. Only google randomly adds an 's' to the end of 'size' which then brings up a search for different size IO needles. I have no idea what they are. I have turned off autocomplete trending searches, I have deleted browsing history, and have google set to not save any history. And it still happens. WTF.
