They purged the editors and opinion writers of basically anyone to the left of Kyrsten Sinema except Charles Blow and Jamelle Bouie back in 2021.
Since then, they've brought on an increasing number of Neocons â just hard-right Middle East warmongering Republicans, but more of a big city limousine George Bush variety. MSNBC has done this too.
So now you get these ardant War with Iran hardliner Conservative people like David French, Tom Friedman, David Brooks, then the ones who are even worse than that like Pamela Paul and Brett Stephens.
Then you get your weirdo angle right wingers. Ross Douthat for an Opus Dei extreme right Catholic (even though he's a convert), Jane Coaston for your disembrained lolbertarian, Margaret Renkel for the Southern View of things which is always conservative, Farah Stockman for the "We could still invade Venezuela!" angle, but writing from Detroit for that working-class cred I guess, even though she really lives up the road from me in Cambridge. John McWhorter to provide some language cover for conservative cultural critique that basically amounts to, "We hate LGBTQ+ people."
It's just wild how far right the cast of characters has turned. I think the pull out of Afghanistan was really the triggering factor. They clearly want the US fighting forever wars in the Middle East and they'd sink the whole republic and make Trump emperor to get it.
TL;DR â The 2024 NYT Op/Ed staff is basically the Fox News staff from 2004.
26
u/LLLLLdLLL Aug 03 '24
It's the same with Ukraine. Anything that dispels the 'Russian narrative of the day' that they are peddling does not make it into the comments. No matter how respectfully and nuanced you frame it.

NYT has been trash for a while
Yes. Since forever. In 1939 they ran a puff piece for hitler (it was not their first one either):
This was after Time Magazine called hitler an "unholy organist of hate" and depicted him operating a torture wheel on their cover.
More recently, they joined forces with steve bannon to run dozens of half-true hit pieces on Hillary:
As a reminder of how all of this transpired, Steve Bannonâs Government Accountability Institute commissioned Peter Schweizer to write the book âClinton Cash.â Prior to publication, they gave it to the New York Times, which published that article in April 2015 featuring the Uranium One deal, with spurious ties to the Clinton Foundation. Over time, Bannon tweaked interest in the book by doing things like releasing a movie version during the Democratic Convention. That is precisely how the âcrooked Hillaryâ meme was born.
The root cause of the problem is that the NYT is owned by a family of billionaires and has been since the 1800s. The paper is this way because the sulzbergers want the paper to be this way. Just like most of the rest of so-called "liberal media" is owned by conservative billionaires.
13
u/DelfrCorp Aug 03 '24
NYT has always been trash. They have amost always been on the wrong side of History on almost every Big, Important issue from their inception.
They always change their tune when the tides have very clearly turned &/or the inevitable has happened, but they almost never truly support valid causes from the onset/Get-Go. Even after they finally change their tune, they still regularly publish 'Opinion' pieces defending the despicable opposing positions for years/decades until it becomes too utterly indefensible.
Spineless Cowards. They are a perfect example of Neo-Liberalism at its best/worst.

Someone must have retired..
23
31
u/PowerandSignal Aug 03 '24
Publisher Arthur Sulzberger, jr. retired in 2020 and passed control to A.G.Sulzberger, his son, who has focussed on making a stronger digital presence for the paper and increasing subscriptions. He's been successful at those, at the expense of the quality of the product itself. The Times has always been a mouthpiece for the corporate establishment, but you could rely on it to give a fairly neutral view of what's going on in the world. They just wouldn't report on things that didn't fit the narrative.Â
Now it's like their head has been shoved firmly up their ass, and the reporting seems blatantly biased toward corporatocracy and against any progressive thought or action. That was always where their heart lay, but they used to hide it better.Â
It's a damn shame. I've actually enjoyed that paper for a very long time. But not so much lately.Â
16
u/Ruckus292 Aug 03 '24

I really can't believe the New York Times has such trash. And they've corrected this one to Trump 'proposes' Sep 4 debate on Fox News. But the much WORSE offender is the other article about Kamala Harris on the front page of the NYT right now.
It is 'Should Harris Talk About Her Racial Identity? Many Voters Say No.' They interview a black woman where she states [on Kamala's race]
âIâm tired of hearing it,â Ms. Marshall said. âThatâs not an issue. I just want whatâs best for the country.â
This week, after former President Donald J. Trump claimed falsely that Ms. Harris âhappened to turn Blackâ only recently, the vice president did not attempt to clarify the obvious: that she has, in fact, been Black all her life.
She did not mention race at all. Rather, she denounced Mr. Trumpâs âdivisiveness and disrespectâ in a previously planned speech to a historically Black sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho.
Like what an utterly trash headline. They note in the opening paragraphs that she has refused to engage with Trump. Why aren't they asking 'Should Donald Trump keep talking about Harris' Race?' because that's what this the current issue is not some made up scenario where Kamala fully leans into this stuff.
The main headline on JD Vance is pretty nonsensical as well. The current headline is 'How JD Vance Thinks About Power' and it's an analysis of interviews/statements by Vance where he states he wants to do blatantly unconstitutional things to test the limits of what the judiciary is willing to overturn and he states he wants parents with children to get an extra vote for each child they have, like jesus christ - that should have been your headline. The article notes how he wants to fire pretty much everyone in federal government agencies and replace them with loyalists to Trump, how he forms his opinions from a fucking monarchist blogger and Viktor Orban, how he wants parents with children to get more votes, how he loves to quote Richard Nixon and state 'the professors are the enemy' and how he would not have certified the 2020 election, how he not only wants a federal abortion ban, but he OPPOSES EXCEPTIONS FOR RAPE AND INCEST, and the headline is 'how JD Vance Thinks About Power' instead of any one of the horrifying views that he has that they discuss in the article itself.

What's interesting is it may backfire. He can get people to crowds, sure, and against Biden that's great. He may find, however, that people are very hyped about Kamala. She just packed out Atlanta and people want to see Trump get metaphorically punched in the dick. Nothing would amuse me more than seeing 3/4 of the crowd be Kamala supporters and just laugh at him and jeer through all his answers. How did we lose a bastion of reporting?
142
u/SquawkyMcGillicuddy Aug 03 '24
There has been a concerted effort in the USA for decades now to eradicate local news sources (newspapers, TV stations) and consolidate media into national empires owned and controlled by the nationâs wealthiest individuals. This has had the effect of virtually eliminating the investigative journalism that holds power to account and exposes corruption. Sources like the NYT and WaPo now publish juuuuust enough legit journalism to give thin cover for âarticlesâ like this one
29
u/GovernmentOpening254 Aug 03 '24

All of that is absolutely true. It's also true that in the digital era, people demand news for free. Good reporting costs money, but consumers aren't as willing to pay for it anymore. So they need to drive engagement, and the internet has shown that the best way to do that is bait.
Journalism has been crumbling for decades, one tiny piece at a time, and the demand for news to be free is a huge part of that.

BBC has done exactly the same.
Why bother with journalism when you can just cut-and-paste one side's perspective verbatim from press releases and social media posts?
The BBC does add somewhat better background in the article body, but it's the disingenuous title that's the problem. And an unknowing reader can't even tell from the article that Fox News is rabidly Republican-biased, along with the two proposed Fox presenters.
Newsweek describes it better, including this more accurate quote:
"He says he will only debate on his safe space on Fox News with a packed arena and moderators of his choosing. He is absolutely terrified of Kamala Harris."
And I love this:
While referencing the Olympic gold medalist swimmer and mocking Trump's tendency to occasionally post in all caps, former Barack Obama speechwriter David Litt said: "I HAVE AGREED TO A SWIM MEET WITH KATIE LEDECKY SO LONG AS SHE WEARS A FULL SUIT OF ARMOR AND HOLDS HER BREATH THE WHOLE TIME ALSO I GET A JET SKI."
Edit: added Newsweek refs
Edit #2: it seems that both NYT and BBC have changed their headlines finally. The previous BBC headline was "Trump agrees to Fox News plan for debate with Harris"

Yeah what the fuck does âAgreesâ mean? Â It certainly doesnât mean âoffersâ.Â
24
u/Thue Aug 03 '24
I assume it means "agrees with Fox News". Fox News proposed the debate, and Trump agreed to it. The words are literally true I guess, but any reasonable reader will assume the "agrees with Kamala Harris" meaning from context.
18
u/SweaterKittens Aug 03 '24
Yeah, it's a perfect example of a technically correct headline that's also clearly misleading. Like a headline saying "Woman Shoots Husband in Front of Child" when she was defending the child from being abused.
It immediately frames the Fox News debate as something they both agreed to.
13
u/Thue Aug 03 '24
The subtitle also says "the debate will take place in Pennsylvania", completely ignoring that the debate has not been agreed on, will in all likelihood not take place at all. The title alone might charitably be called an error, but the addition of the subtitle makes it hard to assume good faith.
I bet that after Kamala goes to the ABC debate with an empty chair, Trump plans to go to the Fox News debate with an empty chair. But the 2 situations are simply not the same. And notably the Fox News "debate" will not be a debate at all, no matter what NYT writes.

Iâm glad I donât pay for the NYT. What a fall from grace. They used to have integrity. Now they may as well be the New York Post, or at the rate they are going, Breitbart or Infowars.

Why is he trying to get Kamala at one of his rallies in the same state his assassination attempt took place in. I feel like that doesn't sound safe

u/Earl_of_69 Aug 03 '24
Kamala Harris would do well to refrain from arguing relevant points using actual data. It's best that she just make fun of him, and mean girl the shit out of the situation. It's the only way to make him look bad.
His followers don't believe data, and they don't care. They want to see a fight. We're talking about professional wrestling/race fans. They're not complex citizens.

He knows certain members of Fox News will give him the questions ahead of time. As in the rest of his life the only way he can possibly win is to cheat.

Harris is a sitting Vice President of the United States of America. Trump is failed businessman who was convicted of 34 felonies, one civil case where he was found liable for sexual assault, and has several more court dates forthcoming having to do with matters of state, and election security. I don't see why he gets to call the shots.
Harris was the captain of her college debate team, so I am not worried she can wipe the floor with man-baby, Diaper Don. I just don't see why this Trump fellow should have any say in where any debate takes place - and further - he should be kissing the ring for not being locked up by Biden who has "Presidential immunity" now.
NYT should have gone with their usual "this could be bad for Biden" trope.

Bigger problem: swing states have installed election denialists in positions that will stop the certification of the November election. this is all a distraction. And the new. York times has not deemed it important enough to mention it.

Trump wants a packed arena, so what??? He can cause as much chaos as possible??? Make it so it's difficult to find an assassin??? Like she should turn that shit down... ABC is an incredibly neutral news source, trumpy doesn't like being called out to his face for being a weird fuckin moron and that's a fact...

But he is no longer pulling the full stadiums that he was, and actually Harris is starting to do that. Dems could fill that stadium now and laugh Trump out of there with his weirdness.

Trump had to do something, Biden was getting all the headlines when he freed hostages. Trump said heâd be the only one to free themâifâ he got elected (we see how that went.) Also being badgered by Harris to debate.
